Ik, Multatuli, neem de pen op
Onder het pseudoniem ‘Multatuli’ schreef Eduard Douwes Dekker de Max Havelaar, of de koffieveilingen der Nederlandse handelsmaatschappij (1860). Hierin uitte hij sterke kritiek op de manier waarop de overheid omging met de inheemse bevolking in Nederlands-Indië. Het boek zorgde voor veel controverse en geldt als dé ‘klokkenluider’-roman uit de Nederlandse literatuur.
Het museum is gevestigd in Multatuli’s geboortehuis en toont persoonlijke eigendommen, gebruiksvoorwerpen en bijzondere exemplaren van zijn oeuvre. De bezoeker maakt kennis met de geschiedenis van Indonesië ten tijde van Dekkers verblijf, en met zijn mooie, tragische en tegenstrijdige persoonlijke leven.
I, Multatuli, pick up the pen
Under the pseudonym Multatuli, Eduard Douwes Dekker wrote his book Max Havelaar, or, The Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company (1860). In this novel he expressed strong criticism on the Dutch government about the way it treated the natives of the former Dutch Indies. The book aroused a lot of controversy and is known as the ‘whistleblower novel’ of Dutch literature.
The museum is located in Dekker’s birth house, and shows many personal belongings, utensils and special copies of his oeuvre. The visitor gets acquainted with the history of Indonesia in the times of Dekker’s stay, and with his beautiful, tragic and contradicting personal life.
